TO BE FOND OF - быть привязанным, любить (кого-то/что-то), быть влюблённым в кого-то/во что-то

to be fond of something - любить что-то, быть влюблённым во что-то

Ex.: I'm fond of good food.
She is fond of beautiful cars.
We are fond of these mountains.

to be fond of somebody - любить, быть влюблённым в кого-то

Ex.: She is fond of this guy!
He is fond of that woman.
The children are fond of their parents.

So, in this phrase "He fonds of clever machines" is not correct, you should write "He is fond of clever machines" (He's fond of clever machines)

Do you understand why?

Actually, I would say: "He likes clever machines"

Another thing, but it's not important! I belive that Mr. Lynn is fond of clever machins like: calculator, computer, .........





I think being an engineer he speaks about all kinds of clever machines not only about cars!
